Leadership

Mufti Muhammad Sajjad Raza, Chair

Born in the holy city of Madina, Imam Raza received his Ijazat (religious degrees) in a range of Islamic disciplines, completing advanced studies to earn the title of “Mufti,” an expert in Islamic law qualified to issue fatwas. He studied for 11 years at the renowned Islamic institute Jamia tul Madina, and earned an M.Phil in Social Sciences from the University of Karachi. He also hosted a religious talk-show on the popular international station GEO-TV.

For a time in his youth, Imam Raza advocated for hardline political and theological positions, denouncing America as well as those who did not follow his particular religious sect. But encounters with both non-Muslims and Muslims from other sects opened his eyes and his heart to a more inclusive and open-minded path. In 2022, Imam Raza moved to New York City, where he soon became a prominent community leader and today serves as Chief Imam of the Madina Masjid in Brooklyn’s “Little Pakistan.”

Dr. Khushtar Noorani, President of AMAN’s National Imams Council

Dr. Noorani earned degrees in Islamic sciences from seminaries in India and Libya, with specialization in Quran, Hadith, and Fiqh. He then earned a BA in Islamic Studies from Aligarh Muslim University, a Master’s in Islamic Studies from Jamia Millia Islamia University, and a Ph.D. from Dehli University.

Author of many articles and several books, Dr. Noorani is the Chief Editor of “Jaam-e-Noor,” the

largest circulated spiritual magazine in South Asia. He is an Advisory Board Member for several journals, including Istidrak (University of Karachi), The Islamic Culture (Sheikh Zayed Research Centre), and Al-Ulum Journal of Islamic Studies (Al-Karam  International Institute).
